A press release is the most commonly used form of communication to inform journalists of your activities. It is free and can be an extremely powerful medium to communicate with your target audience. It can be more effective and credible than advertising if approached correctly.
Its important to keep on top of what is happening in your area. Listen to the local radio station, read the paper/s to learn what kind of topics are reported on. Are there any events or key groups who would be interested in the work you do or events you are planning. Journalists are more likely to pick issues that affect their target audience.
The key to good communication is knowing who you are talking to. When sending press releases to news desks, be sure to confirm who you are sending them to. Many local newspapaer share the same news desks so you may end up sending duplicate information. Addressing your envelope to the correct person also may ensure it gets read.
